Euronews: What’s Happening Now

Brendan Dooley, Lorenzo Allori, Carlotta Paltrinieri

How to analyze 50,000 historical documents in a single lifetime? How about four years? Time to bring in the machines! Before printed newspapers, news was written by hand in specially designed sheets distributed by courier; fortunately some 200 volumes of this practically unknown material (called “avvisi” in Italian) has remained all in one convenient location–Florence, Italy–including information about all the states of Europe and the known world, from the 16th through the 18th century. Our project called EURONEWS, generously funded by the IRC and currently being carried out in partnership with the Medici Archive Project and the Florence State Archives, experiments with new methods for examining the circulation and content of these documents. Our presentation will illustrate the state of play to date.

Features to be discussed include the challenges of data gathering from manuscript, text editing in XML, our new platform for data acquisition and analysis, and our current questions and hypotheses about news construction, sources and circulation, as well as the possible impact of our work.
