Re: 1972 Valuation Appeal/ Fr. Matthew Hall, Cork R.V. £60.
Dear Fr. Anthony,
Many thanks for your kind letter of the 9th inst. enclosing copy official notice and apologies for the delay in replying, due to severe pressure of work.
Incidentally, I did advise Fr. Senan, Guardian, that as a result of our efforts, we did succeed in having the R.V. £120 at issue reduced to R.V. £60.
I enclose for your information, copies of two of my recent letters to Fr. Senan because, as you will see, I have suggested in one that a further reduction still might be possible next year!
Apropos your kind enquiry re our fees, our long established basis therefor is, in the main, based on results, and is in accordance with the Scale which we adopted in your Ards, County Donegal, Appeal last year, viz. an initial fee of (say) £15 in this case, plus 1 year's full rates on the reduction in valuation secured, (£60 x £7.67), or some £475.
However, I have no intention of employing our usual Scale of fees in this case for the reason that my late father, (Donnchadh O' Buachalla, R.I.P. , who with my late mother, R.I.P. , were Principal Teachers in Ballyvourney N.S for some 40 years), had a long and harmonious relationship with the Capuchins at Rochestown and at Feis Mhaitiu, (where all his 5 children"performed" during their early adolescence).
In the circumstances would it be reasonable then that a fitting gesture to his memory would be that a contribution be made from your Community funds towards the Feis funds, in lieu of any fee which I would otherwise nominate.
You may perhaps think well of the suggestion to award a medal or some such minor trophy to be associated with my dear father for competition annually.
All good wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Donal O'Buachalla
